Altar Servers

Coordinator:

Bronvin Grainger

Description:

Bring and hold important items such as books, the thurible, the lavabo water and towel, and sacred vessels to hold the consecrated bread.

Training:

Regular training on pre-arranged Saturday mornings.

Commitment:

Be prepared to attend Mass every Saturday evening or Sunday morning, arriving 20 minutes before Mass, to make sure everything is ready.

Catechism

Coordinators:

Aileen Swartz and Serena Swartz

Description:

Catechists in the parish teach our young parishioners the Catholic Faith and prepare them to receive the sacraments.

Training:

There is regular archdiocesan training and new catechists are assisted with teaching material and mentoring by more experienced catechists.

Commitment:

Training sessions in the Archdiocese, once or twice a year, a planning meeting in the parish in January and July, and one hour a week of teaching, from 09:15 to 10:15, on Sundays during school terms.

Choir

Coordinator:

Description:

Assist with and support the singing during Mass. At present there is only a choir at the 10:30 Mass on a Sunday, but it would be ideal to have choirs at the other two weekend Masses as well.

Training:

The choir meets for a practice before Mass.
Commitment:

Be prepared to attend practices for singing at Mass, and

assist with the singing during Mass.

Cleaning Ministry

Coordinator:

Description:

Once a week the team gathers to clean the church and prepare it for the weekend Masses.
Training:

On the job training with other members.
Commitment:

Meet once a week, on Fridays at 17:00, to help clean the church.

Cultural Liturgy Group

Coordinator:

Yeukai Nyakatawa
Description:

Organising and leading of Cultural Liturgy celebration at the 10:30 Mass on the last Sunday of the month. Meeting, support and fellowship with fellow parishioners in the ministry.

Training:

Training in the parish. No specialised requirements, except a willingness to share your culture and language with the parish.

Commitment:

Preparation meeting at 11:45 on the second-last Sunday of the month. Practice on the Saturday afternoon at 14:00 before the Sunday cultural Mass.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Coordinator:

Ameer Mohamed
Description:

Distribute Holy Communion to the sick and housebound, and when necessary, to assist the priest in distributing Holy Communion during Mass. Ministers must have their own transport.

Training:

Those who would like to serve in this ministry, put their names forward. Due to the nature of this ministry, those who are willing are then asked by the priest to serve. They will be trained and commissioned. There is regular archdiocesan training and there are meetings and training sessions here at St John’s.

Commitment:

Be rostered to serve once a week, typically on a Sunday after Mass, or every second weekend, depending on the number of ministers. There is also the possibility of serving for a weekday Mass.

Fundraising Committee

Description:

Raising funds for the parish through planning and running of events.

Training:

Working together as a committee to plan events.
Commitment:

A planning meeting once a month and running of the different fundraising events.

Flower Ministry

Coordinator:

Beatrice Boise

Description:

Provision of flowers and arranging of flowers in the sanctuary of the church for liturgical celebrations.

Training:

Training in the parish.
Commitment:

Be rostered to provide and arrange flowers for the church. Depending on the number of those in the ministry this could be approximately every two months.

Music Ministry

Coordinator:

Description:

Operation of the data projector and the playing of the backtracks for hymns during Mass from the computer. Particularly suited to tech-savvy youth.

Training:

Training in the parish.
Commitment:

Be rostered to serve at the Mass you usually attend each weekend, perhaps every second weekend, depending on the number of operators who will attend a particular Mass each weekend.

Proclaimers of the Word

Coordinators:

Description:

Proclaiming the Word of God during Holy Mass.

Training:

There is regular archdiocesan training and there are meetings and training sessions here at St John’s.

 

Commitment:

Be rostered to read at a Mass that you regularly attend.

Property Maintenance

Description:

A team of parishioners who do regular inspections and plan and execute maintenance or repair of the church property, in the areas of carpentry, tiling, plastering, painting, electrical work, plumbing, bricklaying, gardening, etc.

Training:

Depending on the need, various levels of help can be given. There will always be the possibility of working with skilled labourers who will pass on skills as you work together.

Commitment:

Meet once a month to plan projects. Work as individuals, small groups or as part of a maintenance Saturday morning in the parish.

Sacristans

Coordinator:

Julia Mohamed

Description:

Preparation of the church and sanctuary, including arranging the liturgical books, the vestments, and sacred vessels necessary in the celebration of the Mass. Opening the church before Mass and locking up afterwards.

Training:

There is regular archdiocesan training and the existing sacristans in the parish will help with training here at St John’s.

Commitment:

Be rostered to serve at one Mass per weekend or every second weekend, depending on the number of sacristans. There is also the possibility of serving for a weekday Mass.

Coordinator:

Derek Williams

Description:

Members reach out to vulnerable and marginalised people in this local community. They work to relieve suffering and promote human dignity amongst the poor.

Training:

On the job training with other members.

Commitment:

A planning meeting once a month and participation in the different projects and initiatives.

Ushers

Description:

Assist during the celebration of Mass with guiding people to their pew seats. Preventing movement and disturbance from late comers during key moments during the Mass. Assisting with taking up the offertory collection and the presentation of the gifts by parishioners during Mass.

Training:

Training in the parish.

Commitment:

Be rostered to serve at the Mass you usually attend each weekend, perhaps every second weekend, depending on the number of ushers who will attend a particular Mass each weekend.

St Johns Maitland Vision and Mission

Welcoming Ministry

Description:

Greet parishioners in the foyer and outside the church as they arrive for Mass. Learn their names and hand out newsletters. Assist with sign-ups, when needed before and after Mass.

Training:

Training in the parish.

Commitment:

Be rostered to serve at the Mass you usually attend each weekend, perhaps every second weekend, depending on the number of welcomers who will attend a particular Mass each weekend.
